McCallum Bros Ltd supplies high quality sand suitable for a number of industries including the building and construction industry.

Sand is an important commodity for the building and construction where high-quality sands (defined by their mineral content, grain size, and the absence of components such as organic material and clays - all of which reduce the strength of concrete) are primarily used in the production of ready-mixed concrete.

Other uses for our sand products include landscaping, sportsfield drainage, sports turf, beach replenishment and industrial use.

Sources of Sand

Offshore coastal sand extraction is a significant source of sand throughout the world including Britain, France, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, United States, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. The main source of sand for Auckland's building industry (as with similar regions around the world) is from marine coastal deposits.

Extraction Methods

In the Auckland Region, marine coastal sand extraction is typically carried out using suction dredges from consented areas. Sand is screened using mesh sizes of the order of 3 mm. The material caught on the screen (including shellfish, snails and other marine life) is returned to the seabed.

Asphalt Sand

McCallum Bros Ltd has two grades of asphalt sand available for asphalt production.

Our asphalt sands offer manufacturers a consistent and compatible product with very high sand equivalence.

The key benefits of our grades of sand are as follows:

  • Low absorption - Our asphalt sands have been thouroughly tested and absorption has been measured consistently as less than 0.4%.
  • Sand Equivalent - Our asphalt sands typically have very high sand equivalents between 94 and 98%.
  • Cleanliness and Durability - Our asphalt sands have been screened and washed and are free of clay and silt particles. Our products are entirely free of pumice.
  • Composition and compatibility - Our asphalt sands are primarily comprised of feldspar and the particle shape is classified as angular to sub angular.
  • Consistency - Due to our unique sourcing and washing process we are able to offer superior consitency compared to other suppliers in the market.
  • Moisture Content - McCallum Bros Ltd stores sand under shelters to deliver lower moisture contents to manufacturers.

Our asphalt sand is available throughout the Auckland region and in other regions by arrangement. Test results are available upon request.

Transport options - We can provide supply and deliver quotations to your site or work with your nominated transport operator.

Trotting Surfaces

McCallum Bros Ltd has two products suitable for use on trotting tracks.

EQ3 mix

This mix has now been used on trotting tracks for over three years with great feedback from the industry

Trotting Mix

Our new product (now in use at Alexandra Park) is a coarser material than EQ3 containing crushed shell only. This increases the amount of water able to flow through making it an ideal surface material for tracks over winter.

Benefits delivered to track owners include:

  • Particle shape, cleanliness and durability
Trotting Mix and EQ3 are screened and washed products free of clay and silt particles. They are entirely free of pumice.
  • Particle sizing
The products have a good mix of particle sizes providing good stability and a consistant firmness across the track.
  • Displacement and movement
Trotting Mix and EQ3 are not displaced easily by the horse and sulky requiring less maintenance of the track.
  • Excellent drainage
Water tends to flow well through the material. Owners report less rutting and evolution of water channels through the material.

Trotting Mix and EQ3 are available all year round in Auckland,Thames, BOP, Waikato and upper north island regions.

Transport options

We can provide cost effective solutions for delivery to sites.
McCallum Bros Ltd only use experienced drivers for trailing the mix on tracks.

Turf Sand

McCallum Bros Ltd produce a variety of turf sands to cater for most applications

Fields 800

Fields 800 is a sand product ideal for use in the turf industry.
Fields 800 exhibits excellent drainage and particle distribution for use in field drainage systems, sand top dressing applications and turf replenishment.
Particle distribution permits soil aeration and provides good resistance to compaction.
The product performs well in high rainfall locations and has been installed widely throughout the Auckland region since June 2006, in applications ranging from top dressing to full sand carpet re-instatement.

Fields 800 is a marine sand sourced from deepwater (30 metres) and is consistently coarser than other marine sands available for turf application.
Fields 800 has been tested in trials carried out by the NZ Sports Turf Institute. They found no significant difference in grass growth characteristics or worm activity between grass grown using Fields 800 and grass grown in a "proven industry standard" sand. Fields 800 is also available in smaller quantities suitable for customers wanting to refurbish residential lawns.

Play Sand

Play-sand 550 is a graded, naturally formed sand ideal for use in sand pits at home and in supervised care settings.

Sand Play:

  • Is enjoyed by children of all ages
  • Stimulates the children's senses - touching, tasting seeing sand flowing through the fingers
  • Develops gross motor skills - pushing, using spades, rakes, diggers...
  • Develops fine motor skills - grasping, letting sand flow through the fingers
  • Supports and extends other areas of play - the sand area is a great area for children to explore simple principles of science, weighing and measuring, creativity and role pla

Play-sand 550 meets the requirements for sand as described in the Supervised Early Childhood Facilities - Playground Equipment and Surfacing Handbook (New Zealand standard SNZ HB 5828.2.20061).
The recommended depth for play sand is between 45 to 60cm.
With hydraulic conductivity of 500mm/hr, this sand drains well during heavy rainfall events and after water play (adequate drainage beneath pit should be installed to remove water from the sandpit area).
The very small proportion of fine and ultrafine sand reduces the degree of wind borne sand particles. This minimises the irritation caused to children, and adults supervising them, from sand being blown into their face.
Play-sand 550 is free of stones, gravel, pumice and organic material and is able to be moulded when water is added.

Certification: Play-550 play sand has been tested as an impact attenuation surface and has achieved the impact attenuation requirements of NZS5828:2004 for free heights of fall up to:

3m critical fall height at a depth of 350mm uncompacted.

1.5m critical fall height at a depth of 300mm uncompacted.

Certification is valid until August 2015 and is available to customers on application.

The product is available in large or small volumes. In the wider Auckland Region and now in the Bay of Plenty.

Ideas for Play Sand

  • Build a volcano - Get the children to build the volcanic cone then let them squirt vinegar and food colouring onto baking soda (placed on top of the cone in a milk bottle cap) to make it erupt.
  • Provide plastic down pipe and guttering cut offs for building tunnels and rivers/moats
  • Make a simple set of scales to explore weight and volume.
  • Hide treasure/fossils and let your child dig for them (don't forget where you buried them). Make a map for them to follow. Help your child work out systems to make sure they aren't redigging areas.
  • Let your child add water to their sand play to make sand pies, sand castles, sand soup and draw globby pictures or sculptures with dribbly sand.
  • Introduce sandproof/waterproof toys such as cars and animals for imaginative play
  • Add dinosaurs and trees for prehistoric worlds
  • Add or make farm animals and fences
  • Use water proof material to make into moats, rivers, lakes and seas.
  • Moonscapes with craters
  • Use buckets and a simple set of scales (see saw) to introduce concepts of volume and weight. Dry sand versus wet sand
